The procedure of IVF is done in a series of steps as described below.
Egg retrieval

Sperm retrieval

Fertilisation
Artificial fertilisation is done by an embryologist in a laboratory setting by fusing together the eggs and sperms and then leaving them overnight. In cases of weak sperm, methods such as ICSI are performed. The development of embryos takes place within 3 to 6 days. They are analysed for quality and about 2-3 embryos are implanted in the uterus.
Implantation
Implantation is done with the help of a catheter inserted through cervix. More than one embryo is transferred to increase the probability for pregnancy.
