Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy are minimally invasive surgical procedures, which could help women with gynecological problems like Fibroids, Ovarian Cyst, Endometriosis and many other issues. They are also used to remove the scar tissue and clear fallopian tube blockages which causes infertility.
When the cause of infertility cannot be predicted using a normal physical examination, generally diagnostic laparoscopy / diagnostic hysteroscopy is suggested. Diagnostic laparoscopy is used to diagnose the infertility issues by checking the outer part of the uterus, pelvic floor, fallopian tubes, whereas diagnostic hysteroscopy is used to look inside the uterus. If a problem is diagnosed using this diagnostic laparoscopy/hysteroscopy then surgical laparoscopy/hysteroscopy is performed to treat the problem. All these procedures will need two or more small incisions to be made.
Laparoscopy is performed by making a small incision in the abdomen, through which a small tube called laparoscope is inserted, the laparoscope is an instrument with a camera attached to it. With the help of this instrument, the internal organs visualized and diagnosed. If the doctor feels that there is a necessity for the surgery, another couple of incisions are made through which the surgical instruments are inserted and then taken out after the surgery. This procedure is usually done under general anesthesia. Laparoscopic surgery can help in removing fibroids, cysts, tubal pregnancy etc; After this procedure, the patient is generally discharged on the same day or next day. And most of the patients return to their routine in a week.
As discussed earlier, Hysteroscopy is performed to diagnose or treat any problems inside the uterus. This procedure is also usually performed under general anesthesia. In this procedure, an instrument called hysteroscope is inserted into the uterus through the cervix. This instrument helps in visualizing the internal part of the uterus to detect any abnormalities and if any problems are detected, one or two small incisions are made through which the surgical instruments are instead and surgery is carried out. This procedure is helpful in removal of cervical polyps, fibroids, and treating endometriosis or heavy menstrual bleeding which are the main causes of infertility. Hysteroscopy procedure involves very less or no complications and the patient will recover faster when compared to the patients who undergo open surgery.
